Prior to adopting a pet, there are a number of things to consider before you begin your search.
First, discuss the adoption with everyone in your household. This will help you to avoid any misunderstanding and surprises later. If you are under 18, your parent or guardian must sign the Dog or Cat Adoption Application and Agreement (see below).
Think about your home environment and whether it is suitable for a pet. If so, what kind of pet would work best?
Consider the lifelong expenses regarding your pets healthcare and feeding. Even dog biscuits and catnip can add up over time.
Remember that animals, like people, have their own personalities and behaviors. Even a well trained, good tempered animal can sometimes be challenging. A good pet owner is a patient pet owner.

Once you have found the perfect pet
-
Potential adopters must be at least 18 years of age to adopt an animal
-
The prospective adopter will satisfactorily fill out an adoption application
-
The prospective adopter must take part in a “Meet & Greet” with the animal prior to any adoption
-
Meet & Greets will be scheduled according to the order in which they were received and requested (to the extent possible based on the status of the animal and their fosters availability).
-
Adoptions opportunities (for qualified adopters) are on a first come first served basis. Scheduling a Meet & Greet is not a means to reserve an animal. Someone else may schedule their Meet & Greet ahead you regardless of the order in which requests were received, but based on your requested meeting time.(especially if your requested time is more than 24 hours out).
-
If you request a Meet & Greet and someone else calls and requests an earlier Meet & Greet, you may( as a courtesy) be called and given the opportunity to move your appointment forward but this is not guaranteed.
-
The Humane Society for Boone County reserves the right to refuse any adoption that is not in the best interest of the animal based on our principles, policies, and standards.
Your new pet will be vaccinated for Rabies and Distemper and tested for Heartworm.
